Gov. Malloy: Flags Lowered to Half-Staff in Honor of the Victims of the Capital Gazette Mass Shooting
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that – in accordance with a presidential proclamation directing flags to be lowered to half-staff throughout the country for one day in honor of the victims of the mass shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland – U.S. and state flags in Connecticut will fly at half-staff beginning immediately until sunset on Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

Gov. Malloy Announces ‘Q Bridge’ to Be Lit Red, White, and Blue for Independence Day
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut will illuminate the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge in New Haven – informally known by residents as the Q Bridge – in red, white, and blue lights on the evenings of Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4, in observation of Independence Day. Beacons capable of projecting light nearly six miles into the clear night sky will be lit until 1:00 a.m. during those nights.

Gov. Malloy Announces Relaunch of Lead Awareness Campaign to Educate Parents on the Dangers and Prevention of Childhood Lead Poisoning
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) is relaunching its campaign to educate parents on the dangers of childhood lead poisoning and the steps that can be taken to prevent exposure to lead. The CDC-funded campaign consisting of billboards, advertisements on Pandora and Facebook, public service announcements, and work with community organizations will be targeted toward black and Latino families living in the areas of the state with the highest concentrations of children with elevated blood lead levels: Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, New Britain, Waterbury and Meriden.

Gov. Malloy Announces Funding to Make Renovations to the Historic Colt Park in Hartford
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that a combination of federal, state, and local grants will help make significant renovations to Hartford’s Colt Park that will allow residents to enjoy the historic site for years to come. He joined Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman, Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congressman John B. Larson, Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Commissioner Robert Klee at the park this afternoon to make the announcement.

Gov. Malloy Directs Flags to Half-Staff Tuesday in Honor of World War II Airman from Winsted
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, in honor of U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. John H. Canty, a World War II airman from Winsted who was killed in action in 1944 at the age of 22 and whose remains were recently discovered and returned to his family. A funeral service and burial with full military honors is being held Tuesday at Arlington National Cemetery, near Washington, D.C.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is appointing Doug Dalena to serve as General Counsel in the Office of the Governor. Dalena currently works in the office as Deputy General Counsel. He joined the Office of the Governor in 2015.

Gov. Malloy Announces Opening of New Corrections Unit Preparing Young Female Inmates to Become Productive Members of Society
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) Commissioner Scott Semple today announced the opening of a new unit at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic that will house female offenders between the ages of 18 to 25 who are nearing the end of their sentences with the goal of preventing these young adults who have committed nonviolent crimes from beginning a life of crime and returning to prison.

Gov. Malloy Submits Request for Federal Presidential Disaster Declaration in Response to May’s Tornadoes and Severe Storms
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has submitted a request for a federal presidential disaster declaration as a result of the tornadoes and severe storms that impacted parts of Connecticut on May 15. It follows several weeks of assessments and data collection conducted by state and local officials to calculate damages and determine whether the required federal qualifications have been met.
